Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is CrossFit?

“CrossFit is the principal strength and conditioning program for many police academies and tactical operations teams, military special operations units, champion martial artists, and hundreds of other elite and professional athletes worldwide. Our program delivers a fitness that is, by design, broad, general, and inclusive. Our specialty is not specializing. Combat, survival, many sports, and life reward this kind of fitness and, on average, punish the specialist. The CrossFit program is designed for universal scalability making it the perfect application for any committed individual regardless of experience. We’ve used our same routines for elderly individuals with heart disease and cage fighters one month out from televised bouts. We scale load and intensity; we don’t change programs. The needs of Olympic athletes and our grandparents differ by degree not kind. Our terrorist hunters, skiers, mountain bike riders and housewives have found their best fitness from the same regimen.”

How do I get started?

Just give us a call or send us an email! We will set up a time for you to come in! It’s that simple.

What should I wear

Wear clothes that are comfortable to work out in. A t-shirt, exercise pants and running shoes are perfect for your first day.

Can I try a class for free?

Yes! All new members are given two days free to come in, meet our coaches and members and give our box a try.

How much does it cost to join?

The cost is different depending upon how many days a week you would like to work out with us. We have 2 and 3 day a week memberships as well as unlimited memberships. We also offer discounts for military, fire, police and medical professionals. Click HERE for more info.

Why Is CrossFit so expensive?

CrossFit is more expensive than a traditonal gym because of the small group classes and the personal instrction you get from your coach. We WANT you to succeed and keep coming back! This is not true of a big box gym full of machines and no personal instruction where they hope to take your $10 a month and never have you walk back in the door. Our classes typically have between 5 and 12 athletes. This gives you the benefit of working with a group of like-minded athletes, gaining strength and energy from the power of a group class while also allowing our coaches to give individual instruction when appropriate.

We also take the guess work out of your programming. You will come in every day and know exactly what you are working on and you will get instruction on how to do it. There is no coming into the box and wondering “what am I working on today?”

What are classes like

Classes run for an hour at a time. Typically they begin with a warm up and stretching session. We will then do a strength building movement and the day will finish with a WOD (workout of the day). Workouts can last between 5 and 30 mins depending on the goals for the week. An important part of CrossFit is keeping things constantly varied, so your workouts are never going to be the same!

What if I can’t do the workouts as written?

It is very rare that anyone comes into a CrossFit gym and is able to immediatley do the workouts as written. Many people may work for years before they are able to do the workouts consistently as “Rx” (as written). That’s ok! One of the greatest things about Crossfit is that everything can be scaled to your ability! We can lower the weights and adjust the movements to whatever your fitness level and we work from there.

I’ve heard that people get hurt doing CrossFit, do they?

Any athletic activity comes with risk. Performing movements with improper form, or using weights that are too heavy can be dangerous, yes. This is why your coaches will assist you in learning proper movement, in scaling to your ability and in making sure that you don’t do too much too soon. Working out always comes with small risk. But spending your life on the couch, being sedentary and eating poorly comes with a much greater risk.

Will I get bulky?

Not if you don’t want to, no. The men and women you see on TV at the CrossFit games and in commercials have worked VERY, VERY hard to look the way that they do. If getting big is a goal for you and you are willing to work for it, we love that and we can certainly help you get there! But getting “bulky” doesn’t happen by accident. What is going to happen is that you will lose weight, feel better, become faster, and have more energy than ever before. As a side-effect, you will also trim down and look more athletically fit than ever before. Aesthetics is a by-product of hard work.

How many times per week should I attend?

This is going to depend on a number of things: your level of fitness upon starting, how well you recover, how well you eat, and how hard you go at each workout. We recommend starting with 3 days a week for the first month so that your body and mind can adjust to the workouts.

How long before I see results?

Again, this depends on you. The more effort you put into each workout and the better you eat, the faster you are going to see results. With the support systems we have in place here at CrossFit 47, we expect you to start seeing results in the first month!

What should I eat?

Nurtition is an integral part of the CrossFit proscription for health and wellness. We recommend that you “Eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar. Keep intake to levels that will support exercise but not body fat.” – courtesy of CrossFit. For more info on nurtritional recommendations, go here.
